Why DigiLocker KYC Is Essential for Dealership Valet Operations

By DriveDesk Team·

Learn how DigiLocker-based Aadhaar and driving licence verification protects your dealership from liability and ensures only qualified drivers handle customer vehicles.

When a valet driver takes a customer's prospective vehicle out onto public roads, your dealership assumes significant legal and operational responsibility. If that driver has an expired or fraudulent licence — and an incident occurs — the liability can fall squarely on you.

What Is DigiLocker KYC?

DigiLocker is an Indian government-backed digital document platform that allows individuals to access Aadhaar-linked documents — including Aadhaar XML, driving licences, and vehicle registration certificates — via OAuth-based sharing. It was created by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and is legally equivalent to original documents under the IT Act.

For dealerships, DigiLocker-based KYC means valet drivers can share their documents digitally through a secure government portal, with verified data flowing directly into your fleet management system — no photocopies, no manual entry, no risk of tampering.

The Two-Step Valet KYC Process

A robust valet KYC flow requires two verifications:

  1. Aadhaar verification — confirms the driver's identity against the UIDAI database via DigiLocker XML. This establishes a verified legal identity tied to a biometric record.
  2. Driving licence verification — confirms the licence is genuine, not expired, and that the name matches the Aadhaar identity. DriveDesk checks the validTo date automatically and flags licences due for renewal.

Once both steps are complete, the valet receives full access to the platform's valet workflows. If either document is missing or expired, they are blocked from accepting new assignments until the issue is resolved.

Why Photocopies Are Not Enough

Photocopies can be forged, expired, or belong to a different individual. They offer no cryptographic proof of authenticity and no programmatic way to check expiry dates. In the event of an accident or insurance claim, a photocopy may not satisfy the insurer or the court.

DigiLocker-sourced documents carry a digital signature from the issuing authority. This makes them cryptographically verifiable and legally defensible — a significant upgrade for dealerships serious about compliance.

Operationalising KYC at Scale

For dealerships with large valet fleets, managing KYC renewals manually is impractical. DriveDesk automates this: licence expiry dates are tracked against each valet's profile, and alerts are triggered before expiry — giving staff time to prompt the driver to update their DigiLocker documents before their access lapses.

This proactive approach keeps your fleet compliant without requiring manual monitoring, and ensures every vehicle that leaves your lot is driven by a legally verified, currently-licensed driver.
